Settled cozily in her sunny kitchen, Gert Carver was deeply absorbed in The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie when a loud knocking on her unlocked back door snapped her to attention. Doors were frequently left unlocked in the village of Indian Falls, so she carefully marked the page she was reading, and simply called out, "Come on in."
